I am a VITA volunteer. For those foreign to the organization, it stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance.

Many students from Juarez-Lincoln & Palmview High school who got certified after a day-long training may volunteer to help families who receive an annual income of $46,000 or less file their income tax for free. Despite the stress from rigorous classes and seemingly endless homework, Tuesdays and Thursdays from January 26th-April 6th, from 5-7:30 students stay after school to dedicate their time to their community.

I found it to be a great opportunity to help my community, get community hours, obtain work experience, and further my understanding of how the “real world” works. I expect to be at every VITA night donating my time and effort to those in need.
